BIC FLASHBACK #14 - 'Temple Of Desire' (Box Cutter Mix) ft. Rafe Pearlman
‘Temple Of Desire’ is certainly a bit different than the other songs on ‘The Storm Before The Calm’, yet somehow sits right along side. Musically, it is probably the most different BIC song we have written; odd major to minor - to major - to minor decending chord progressions. I knew it would require a different type of singer to weave a medley around these chords; and I am thrilled that both Michael Rozon and Tyler Bates suggested Rafe Pearlman! His lyrics spin a romantic tale, even a bit lecherous … ‘I set my sights on the Queen’s own daughter’. Rafe’s melodic sense dances with and around the track’s chordal progresses seamlessly.
With the Covid shutdown of most of the movie industry, my long time friend Tyler Bates … who would have been scoring John Wick 4 now had the time to remix a track for ‘Out Of Chaos Comes…’. He even enlisted his former Marylin Manson cohort, drummer Gil Sharone to had a new beat to his ‘Box Cutter’ remix. Tyler’s remix is more concise than the original , with lots of new sonic element, including a very cool guitar line!
”Music is very personal to me, so it's rare that I remix or re-imagine another artist's music. But after decades of sharing our musical experiences through friendship, I was thrilled when Michael Ciravolo urged me to create a new expression of "Temple of Desire," that is truly my own. The original song is already amazing, so the bar was a high mark to reach, but. Rafe Pearlman's evocative lyrics and soulful vocal performance inspired me to explore a new dimension for this track. I love both versions!" … Tyler Bates
After our dark wave-esque ‘A Kind Cruelty’ video, I wanted to again swing the pendulum back 180* with this next video. I talked with Vicente doing a sort of lighthearted ‘making of’ style video. Tyler graciously was onboard and offered his amazing studio to shoot this in. I love Vicente’s choice of going B&W (with the only color being the red ‘recording’ sign in the opening montage’. I wanted their to be a bit of Los Angeles ‘setup’ before the song’s downbeat… so Tyler scored a music intro that you can hear before the actual song starts. This video is different from any of the other videos we have done … and it was a lot of fun to shoot!
