BIC FLASHBACK #5 - 'ACOUSTIC STORM' ft. ASHTON NYTE
without a doubt, the line ‘there is always a light’ is the official BIC battle-cry! As we began to assemble the tracks o be part of ‘beauty re-envisioned’, I really wanted it to be a non-traditional remix album. I had already convinced Michael Rozon to deconstruct/reconstruct ‘I Will Follow You’ (featuring Evi Vine), which became the gorgeous ‘Cotton Socks' Mix’. Thankfully, it took very prodding to get Ashton on-board for a new version of ‘Storm’. He jumped all in and recorded all of the instruments and re-sang it, resulting a this beautiful version. I added the electric guitar lines and sent it back to him to mix. To me, the result is one of the highlights of ‘beauty re-envisoned’!
“When Michael suggested I have a go at re-imagining something for the Beauty Re-envisioned album, I knew it had to be ‘Storm’. As the first song we had written together for the first album, it seemed only fitting that it get a loving remake for the new release. As a big fan of acoustic music, I wanted to try a stripped down, more intimate approach to this version. This meant re-recording it from scratch, as I wanted to re-sing the vocals in a more introspective way, to match the arrangement I had in my head. One thing lead to another and I ended up recording a number of acoustic and electric guitars, as well as bass, keyboards and percussion as I wanted the song to just keep building to an explosive final chorus. So much for stripped down… :) Michael then added some beautiful lead electric guitar bits and counter melodies which gave the song the final magic it needed. In essence this ended up being a mirror version of the original in many ways. I feel it completes the story of Storm and sets the stage for what lies ahead” .. ASHTON NYTE
Now on to the video! Ashton had a trip planned Los Angeles, so we began discussing the possibility of doing a video. I always try to make each video as much of a polar opposite from its predecessor as possible … and this version of ‘Storm’ certainly lends itself to be way different than ‘Un-Natural Disaster’. We brought Vicente in on this again and we decided the the space at Tiger Lab would work nicely for the sort of intimate vibe we wanted. Vicente had the idea of trying to shot ‘in the round’ … which in the end we got some elements of. I had remembered the cool candelabras I had scene when we shot the original ‘Storm’ video at Prop Heaven … so I borrowed them to use to represent ‘the light’. We had Tish and Dirk join us, adding a cool ‘MTV’ unplugged vibe to the visuals. Really happy with this one …. a good song is a good song, no matter how it’s presented. I do hope to do another video with Mr. Nyte in the future!
