BIC FLASHBACK #4 - 'UN-NATURAL DISASTER' ft. dUG PINNICK, ICE T and ZAKK WYLDE

The entire concept of this video stemmed from Dug’s lyrics. He and I had a discussion over lunch. about what the song was going to be about. He lived in Texas for a long time, and I am a New Orleans native … and both areas were devastated by Hurricane Katrina and Harvey. That is the lyric direct he took … the hurricane being the ‘chaos; and the people helping each other was the ‘beauty’ . ‘Un-Natural Disater’ appears on out debut album, but Eric (a/k/a Statik) from Collide did an amazing remix on ‘beauty re-envisioned’ so I decided to go with that version to begin to promote the remix record.

The original version already featured dUg Pinnick on vocals and bass, The Offspring’s Pete Parada on drums (Pete is a dear friend that toured with me in Gene Loves Jezebel) and of course Ice T. (Big thanks to Vince and Ernie C. for getting Ice on this song!) . Even though I actually liked my chaotic guitar solo on the OG versions … when Zakk Wylde said he would be happy to play … I was more than happy to delete mine! Watching Zakk … a true guitar hero work out the solo in our studio was mind blowing. He is so f*cking good and he really took the time to craft a brilliant solo. I am eternally grateful for that.

So now on to the video! Vicente and I talked about a concept … which came together as soon as we found the ‘rain room’ at FD Studios in downtown Los Angeles. I told dUg expect to get wet! Not sure why I decided to wear a black leather trench coat … as it weighed about 50 pound once it got soaked! With Pete and Ice not being there … we decided to use the TV screen (we actually bought it at a Good WIll store) to work them both in. Pete had cameras in his home studio so we got footage from him. More on Ice T in a bit. So we had Tish be the TV ‘weather lady’ to tie into Zakk’s solo part. The door markings after Katrina (the square painted on doors notating dead/rescued gas leaks, etc) was national news. We decided to use my home’s front door (with faux markings) to lead into Zakk’s bombastic solo part. it was so great watching Zakk go ‘full rock star’! We also got a shot of my water soaked guitar floating in the pool … along with a reproduction of the infamous New Orleans news paper headline Just trying things together as we went along.

We them moved to Tiger Lab Studio (a great spot that we have used for multiple BIC videos) to get shots of Dug and I with some projections on us. But we still needed to get Ice T in this.

As luck would have it, Schecter Guitar was doing the annual NAMM party at the Grove and BODY COUNT was the headline band. Ice graciously agreed to shoot his part backstage! He gave Vicente about 10 minutes to set up and shoot … which he did in a small laundry room. Vicente hastily taped a black cloth on a wall … set up a light and his assistant held up the lyrics , which Ice , the consummate rapper turned TV actor nailed in two takes! So now we had all of the elements to do this thing!!! I found some news real footage … which was heartbreaking to relive and Vicente did a great job editing this all together. When I saw the final edit, I was certainty moved; and decided on the dedication at the end.
