MONDAY Q&A 11/4/19
Q: I felt a similarity between Re-Envisions + Bonus Re-Envisions and The Cure's Mixed Up extensive reworking albums - both are really expansive and I've heard songs in a completely new and different way to the originals (and sometimes loved the reinterpretation more !) So I wondered - are there any particular FBIC remix versions that revealed things or made you listen differently or feel differently about the songs?
A: I am really thrilled with our ‘beauty re-envisioned’ ! I love that it happened organically. really a bit accidentally .. and how it grew to 26 total tracks. I guess I think it has more in common with the Cure’s more recent ‘torn down’ album, which I really like. I think Robert threw away the playbook of the originals on a lot of these remixes, which I do enjoy. A lot of remix records tend to be just done with a the dance floor in mind, but I wanted ‘re-envisioned’’ to be more. I recently gave our record a good full listen as I was uploading (a tad begrudgingly) to Spotify. I think in the past I said my favorite moments are the ‘re-recorded’ songs … ‘the long goodbye (au revoir), Rolan Bolan’s ‘20th Century Boy’ and Ashton’s acoustic ‘Storm’. There are several remixes that jumped out to me … and are almost ‘new’ songs when compared to ‘FBIC’. I think Ummagma’s ‘Look Up’ is a perfect example. While MR and I approached the original in more of a MBV/shoegaze vein… with Tish’s vocals as more of an instrument than a typical lead vocal. I think the Ummagma mix puts it in more of a song context, which it stands very well. I also think both ‘Drifting Away’ remixes are really different … I always loved the ‘Beatle-esque’ sections are really cool, and didn’t get used in the original’. ‘I will Follow You’ is still one of my favorite songs, and I think Michael Rozon’s ‘cotton socks’ mix and Evi Vine’s ‘Eclipse’ reinterpretation of the song are both hauntingly beautiful. The Kevin Haskins/Danny Lohner ‘fall and sway’ remix of the title track is a cinematic masterpiece in my humble opinion also! I thought it was genius that Kevin as a drummer stripped out all drums!! Hope this at least partially answers your question!! :)
