MONDAY Q&A 11/14/19
Q: Are you approaching the next Beauty In Chaos record differently than the first? And do you feel pressure since people seem to really like the first record ?
A: I certainly went into 'FBIC' with a bit of a chip on my shoulder and wanted to prove to myself that I could make the record happen, even with the self-imposed limitations I put on it. That record grew into that star-studded affair that started garnering the 'supergroup' moniker. Honestly, that was something I was never really comfortable with. The music business is certainly different now ... its not like in the past where you had to sell more than the previous release to stay relevant. I don't think I really knew what 'FBIC' was going to sound like, as we just went for it in a way. The only certainty I had was the name and the cover! The songs continued to come and evolve ... and God-willing seemed to end in a cohesive sounding record that became a sonic journey. I guess for this new record, I have more of a sound and vision (I do love that song!) in my head at what I want the record to be. I think I have less concern about who I can get to play on it and more of the overall vibe. I know I've been listening to the Cure's darker records, (Pornography, Disintegration and Bloodflowers).. just revisiting those records and how they made me 'feel'. Great records do evoke a mood ... and even a temperature, if that makes sense? 'Disintegration' always gave me a sense of cold. I'm not at all putting our record on the same plane as these Cure classics, but I think we have gone into this new record focusing more on vibe than before. Maybe a bit more 'linear' than 'here's the big chorus'. As with anything, some people will like this more and some people might say 'what happened!' The only pressure I really feel is a bit self-imposed ... my need to get at least a song released this year. This is selfishly due to the fact the both 'finding beauty in chaos' and 'beauty re-envisioned' are created from 14 songs. Stepping out of the 'curator' role I have in BIC, and actually being a fan of what we’ve created and the amazing people involved ... I want to hear something new …now!
