MONDAY Q&A 5/18/20
Q: Do you think that sometimes skills and virtuose could be an obstacle to create and performing good songs and instrumental music?
A: I like to think so, but maybe that’s because I don’t have virtuoso skills! Honestly I think there is a balance. Most of the musicians I have met that have crazy skills tend to want to showcase it everywhere; even at the expense of the song. For me, I feel I ‘stunted’ myself early on by gravitating towards ‘non-virtuoso’ guitarists, but I do think that helped me develop my own style and sound. I know I do have to work harder at things; but I think that in itself is a good thing as it puts more emphasis on the actual song as opposed to how many notes. I am really not knocking knowing your instrument, and I do know there are indeed areas I can improve at. Thankfully Michael Rozon is a wealth of music-theory knowledge and I have certainly learned (even if begrudgingly!) from him. As BIC evolves, I am certainly trying to learn just enough to not repeat things… new tunings and chord voicings are on my ‘do do list’ . MC X
