BIC FLASHBACK #10 - 'A Kind Cruelty' ft. Curse Mackey
‘A Kind Cruelty’ is the 2nd video/single from ‘The Storm Before The Calm’. I had the music going for this one, but it was Michael Rozon’s moving bass line that I think really made it come to life!. I was introduced to Curse Mackey by both Mark Gemini Thwaite and Steven Seibold. When I approached him about collaborating on the song, it turns out we did meet at a NAMM Show several years ago. Small world! I think his lyrics on this song are fantastic … great imagery!
“When I first heard the instrumental version sent to me by Michael I was immediately captivated by the driving bassline and uplifting musical chorus. For the lyrics I was inspired by a PT Barnum quote referencing electricity and to “put a little of it into your blood and we will beat the world”. So that quote was the literal spark that fueled the rest of words. I just imagined being in the desert under the stars conjuring the energy to face the world. I’m excited to be a part of the Beauty in Chaos project, and to work with Michael and Tish. I admire them both as artists and entrepreneurs and to also be on a record with Wayne Hussey of The Mission UK and Seibold of Hate Dept. and the many other talented artists involved gives me a warm fuzzy feeling and I’ll take all those I can get!” … Curse Mackey
I knew this track would make a cool video … but wanted it to be a bit different. I found the cool location, which looked like an old bomb shelter. It gave a cool post-apocalyptic vibe! I had a rough story line (vampyre/ horror) that I fine tuned with Industrial Film’s Vicente Cordero and Leslie Gladney. Leslie also played the role of the ‘vampire girl’. We also enlisted two 'fire dancersr’ … Lilian and Sinder to do their thing. We again grabbed the much used candelabras from Prop Heaven, and a couple of other trinkets you see used in this one. Tish and Dirk dressed the part and rocked this one hard!! Curse came in and did a great job in the spotlight on this one. I had the idea, that Vicente made happen of the ‘vampire slow-motion walk’ at the beginning and in reverse, on the outro. We also did the burning guitar scene at the end (not this was not a playable guitar by any means!!). I got to wear vampire teeth and drip blood… how goth!!! Honestly, it was the last shot and it took a while to get the guitar to burn. We soaked it in lighter fluid… but I think the bloody-handprint stickers I covered it in where not very flammable. We finally got it to light … with several fire extinguishers at the ready! This video was a blast to make … and has been one of our most popular with our BIC Family!!
