MONDAY Q&A 11/18/19
Q: I have read of the guitars you admire and site as influences. As a guitarist myself, I wanted to ask your thoughts on The Edge and Billy Duffy as guitarists?
A: Ahh … interesting question! I certainly listen to and admire both … mainly their earlier works. I think The Edge is a master of playing effects and sounds. I think he crafts some fantastic parts and has written some great songs. I think his guitar work on ‘Boy’, Unforgettable Fire and ‘The Joshua Tree’ are spectacular. I would be lying if I said I was at least somewhat influnced by his playing with the delay … his 16th note parts are some of the more identifiable guitar parts of the past 25 years. I can’t say I have heard a lot of U2’s recent stuff … with ‘Beautiful Day’ ,which is a really good song, the last I seem to remember.
As for The Cult and Billy Duffy .. I love the ‘Love’ album. I have certainly nicked his open D-string drone thing on more than one occasion! I probably lost some interest in the band when they became more hard rock. It was like ‘where’s the pedals!!’. I did see Billy play ‘Rebel Yell’ with Billy Idol at a benefit show last year and he nailed the solo which is no small task!
